SACCI and Standard Bank Launch Export Readiness Programme for SMEs

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), in proud partnership with Standard Bank, launched the SME Export Readiness Programme in KwaZulu-Natal as part of a national drive to prepare local businesses for global trade. This strategic initiative is designed to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to compete effectively in international markets.
The launch event, held at Standard Bank Kingsmead in Durban, brought together SME owners, trade experts, government representatives, and private sector leaders to discuss export opportunities, funding access, compliance requirements, and global market entry strategies. Absa MSME Township Economy, Empangeni, KZN

SACCI in partnership with Absa proudly hosted the MSME Township Economy and Development Conference at the Umfolozi Hotel Casino Convention Resort in Empangeni. The event brought together key stakeholders, government representatives, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and business leaders to spotlight the role of township economies in driving inclusive economic growth and MSME development in South Africa.
With a full day of thought-provoking discussions, presentations, and networking, the conference created a vital platform to address real challenges faced by township-based businesses and to explore practical solutions that promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and access to markets.
Highlights of the event included presentations from government agencies such as SARS and CIPC, insights into Absa’s Enterprise and Supplier Development initiatives, and dynamic panel sessions led by respected voices from both the public and private sectors.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), in partnership with Discovery, recently hosted a successful Small Business Empowerment Forum aimed at accelerating the growth and sustainability of SMMEs in South Africa. Held at Discovery’s head office in Sandton, the event brought together an influential lineup of speakers and industry leaders for a powerful morning of insight, collaboration, and action. The forum opened with Nthabiseng Chapeshamano, Senior Reputation Manager at Discovery, who welcomed attendees and set the tone for a day focused on impact and opportunity. This was followed by Callie Nel, Head of Sales and Distribution at Discovery Limited, who shared insights into business support services tailored for small enterprises. Advocate Mtho Xulu, President of SACCI, then delivered an inspiring keynote, calling for increased support and inclusive policies to unlock the full potential of South Africa’s entrepreneurial sector.
An important highlight of the programme was an address by S’ngaye Mkhize from the Office of the Tax Ombud, who emphasized the critical role the Ombudsman plays in resolving tax-related challenges faced by SMMEs. The forum also featured Andre Nepgen, Head of Discovery Green, who presented an engaging session on the importance of sustainable business practices and how small businesses can tap into the green economy. A standout segment of the day was a panel discussion on corporate and employee benefits for SMMEs, moderated by Chapeshamano, and featuring Nonku Pitje (CEO), Guy Chennells (Chief Commercial Officer), and Yashen Modi (Head of Technical Marketing). The panel unpacked how health, wellness, and insurance solutions can contribute meaningfully to the long-term success of small businesses.
The event’s interactive Q&A sessions allowed attendees to engage directly with speakers, raising practical concerns and sharing innovative ideas for growth. The forum concluded with a networking lunch that provided a valuable platform for connection between entrepreneurs, business leaders, and institutional partners. This collaborative atmosphere paved the way for future partnerships and follow-up engagements. Empowering Township Economies: #AbsaSMME Summit Soweto

On 27 March 2025, the Soweto Theatre became a hub of entrepreneurial inspiration and empowerment as it hosted the Absa-SACCI National MSME Summit. The event brought together local entrepreneurs, small business champions, corporate stakeholders, and ecosystem builders for a day dedicated to unlocking opportunities within township economies.
The summit delivered a strong message: township-based enterprises are not only central to economic growth but are also rich with innovation and potential. Entrepreneurs in attendance had the chance to engage with business development experts, access critical support information, and participate in workshops designed to strengthen the foundations of their businesses.
One of the standout moments of the day was the presentation of the Small Business Growth Index by Prof. Carel van Aardt, which offered valuable insights into the state of MSMEs in South Africa. Absa/SACCI MSME Conference - Thohoyandou, Limpopo

In the dynamic landscape of global economies, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were pivotal in driving innovation, employment, and economic growth. However, these entities often faced significant barriers that hindered their development.
The Township Economy Development Tour and Conference was organised in Thohoyandou, Limpopo Province, on 13 and 14 March 2025. The two-day event aimed to celebrate and promote the crucial role of township enterprises in driving regional economic growth.
The conference, organised by Absa and SACCI, was a comprehensive initiative designed to support the development of MSMEs in the Limpopo Province. It discussed key barriers to scaling and highlighted the economic impact of township enterprises.

Absa/SACCI Small Business Growth Index aims to enhance the operating environment of small businesses

Absa and the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) today officially announced a new index that will serve as a yardstick for the growth and development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa. Conducted by the Bureau of Market Research (BMR), the Absa/SACCI Small Business Growth Index (SBGI) aims to measure the perceptions of small business owners and managers around business growth, prevailing small business conditions and challenges. It also intends to provide a view on future business prospects and the support required to facilitate the growth and development of this important sector.
Absa- SACCI Limpopo SME Summit - Empowering Entrepreneurs in the SMME Landscape

The Summit “Empowering Entrepreneurs in the SMME Landscape,” held on 18 September 2024 at Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate, was a resounding success. The event featured insightful discussions and practical guidance on how small and medium-sized enterprises can thrive in the current business environment. Keynote addresses from industry leaders, such as Mr. Gabriel Thumelo Mogashoa and Mr. Thinamaano Lusunzi, provided valuable insights into enterprise development and economic opportunities. The partnership between SACCI and Absa highlighted their commitment to supporting SMMEs through financial solutions and chamber services. Sessions on compliance with SARS and CIPC, market access challenges, and agro-processing entrepreneurship offered valuable information for entrepreneurs looking to grow their businesses. The event also featured a pitching competition where SMEs had the opportunity to win prizes for business development support. Overall, the Summit was an excellent platform for networking, learning, and empowering entrepreneurs in the SMME landscape.
Transnet Annual Results Announcement and the Progress on the Recovery

On September 04, 2024, Transnet together with SACCI hosted an informative briefing on the Transnet Recovery Plan. The event began with a crucial safety briefing and evacuation procedure led by the SHEQ Representative, ensuring all attendees were well-informed about safety protocols.
Adv. Mtho Xulu, the President of SACCI, highlighted the key achievements and partnerships that have contributed to the recovery efforts. Following this, Yolisa Kani, Chief Business Development Officer at Transnet, delivered a compelling keynote address, outlining the strategic direction and goals of the recovery plan.
The agenda included a detailed overview of the recovery plan by Solly Letsoalo, Group Chief Operating Officer at Transnet. Letsoalo provided insights into the recovery plan’s core elements, setting the stage for further discussions. Monde Gqoli, General Manager of Economic Strategy, and Thabiso Dikolomela, General Manager of Strategy & Performance Management, then presented specific aspects of the plan, focusing on economic strategies and performance metrics.
The briefing concluded with a Q&A session, skillfully facilitated by Nqabakazi Tetyana, where participants had the opportunity to pose questions regarding both the recovery plan’s progress and its strategic implications. This interactive session allowed for an engaging discussion on the plan’s current status and future outlook.
EXPLORATORY MISSION – SHE EXPORTS TO AFRICA” hosted by the Government of Colombia and SACCI

On August 26, 2024, Hotel Sky Sandton in Johannesburg hosted the “She Exports to Africa” exploratory mission, organized by the Government of Colombia and The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This exclusive, invitation-only event aimed to strengthen business ties between Colombia and South Africa, featuring a day filled with insightful sessions and networking opportunities.
The program commenced with opening remarks from the Colombian Ambassador to South Africa, H.E. Ms. María del Rosario Mina-Rojas, and a presentation of the Free and Productive Woman Fund by Ms. Maria Fernanda Reyes. The day continued with panel discussions on business and investment opportunities, phytosanitary and sanitary requirements, and standards and quality management.
The afternoon sessions covered practical aspects of doing business, including banking services, enterprise registration, intellectual property, and digital marketing strategies. The event concluded with a private lunch and B2B meetings, connecting 24 Colombian companies with potential South African partners across various industries.

Absa Group, SACCI celebrate success of inaugural Women-in-Business Directors Training Programme
Absa Group is proud to have collaborated with the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) to sponsor the inaugural Absa-SACCI Women-in-Business Directors Training Programme, which took place from 5 July to 2 August 2024 and culminated in ten (10) women completing the programme.
The board training programme, conducted by the Institute of Directors South Africa, was aimed at identifying and nurturing women who have the potential to excel in board roles, and equipping them with the essential knowledge and skills required to thrive as successful business leaders and board members. The content covered critical areas such as governance, strategic planning, ethics, compliance and risk management.
