The Durban Chamber Foundation - promoting employee welbeing
The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) strive towards achieving its Mission of creating a conducive economic and business environment in eThekwini and beyond as well as providing services specifically relevant to small and large business in the region. In light of the above and in consideration of the impact of HIV, AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) on the business sector, the DCCI has identified HIV and AIDS and TB as one of its strategic objectives and as a result has established “The Durban Chamber Foundation (DCF)”. This is a Section 21 Company (non-profit Company) and who has as its main objective, to ensure implementation of workplace interventions to mitigate the impact of HIV,AIDS and TB in partnership with business, the public sector, civil society and faith-based organisations.
Since employees spend a large portion of their day at work, the workplace is the ideal setting to tackle these health matters.
In conjunction with the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, DCF designed a series of workplace HIV education programmes. These training programmes were developed with the diverse nature of the South African people in mind and with careful consideration to business time constraints. DCF was previously funded by Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. HIV and TB awareness workplace programmes allows for the integration of essential resources: Human resources, training and testing.
The purpose of these programmes is to educate employees about HIV AIDS and TB, by creating awareness, emphasising confidentiality, teaching about disclosure, and ethics. This is an opportunity to eradicate myths about HIV / AIDS and TB and to create an environment in which employees attain pertinent knowledge make viable and well informed decisions and choices. The response from businesses appealing for training and education for employees on HIV, TB and related health matters has been phenomenal. Companies have realised the cost of HIV/AIDS and TB to business – The loss of essential skills of well learned workers, the high absenteeism rates due to illness have resulted in a decrease in productivity.
