Depressed Trade Conditions  

Trade conditions are approaching the desperate levels experienced towards the middle of 2009 after the great recession of 2007/08. The December 2015 seasonally adjusted composite Trade Activity Index (TAI) measured 39 compared to 42 in November 2015. The December 2014 seasonally adjusted TAI was 17 index points higher than the figure recorded for December 2015. The TAI annual average for 2015 declined to 47 compared to 50 for 2014.

Business Confidence

SACCI today released the SACCI Business Confidence Index (BCI) for December 2015 at their Offices in Rosebank, Johannesburg.
A wide range of matters impacted negatively on the business climate in December 2015. As a result, the SACCI Business Confidence Index (BCI) slipped back further to 79.6 in December - the lowest level for the BCI in 2015. The BCI declined by 3.1 index points from 82.7 in November 2015 and by 8.7 between December 2014 and December 2015. The annual average of 86.4 for the BCI for 2015 is the lowest annual average since the average of 81.3 in 1993.

SACCI COPPER THEFT BAROMETER: OCTOBER 2015

The Copper Theft Barometer level decreased to R12.10 million in October from R12.60 million in September 2015. The October figure is 6.9% lower than a month ago and 43.5% higher than a year ago. While the lower level is a welcome trend in the level of theft, it is possible that it is a result of lower demand in countries such as China where economic growth is slowing and there is a shift from infrastructure development to a consumer and export driven economy. Other factors could include improved diligence on the part of the South African Police, the implementation of legislation aimed at curbing theft, and importantly, the introduction by the South African customs authority of sniffer dogs that have been trained to identify copper and which have been put to work at ports.
