Business Confidence Pending


The downward trend in the SACCI Business Confidence Index (BCI) has for the time been arrested as the BCI stayed around the 80 index mark. After measuring 79.6 in December 2015, the SACCI BCI marginally improved to 80 in January 2016 and was virtually unchanged at 80.1 in February 2016. Since the more recent peak of 92.8 in February 2015, the BCI lost 12.7 index points.

SACCI COMMENTS: BUDGET 2016

In his budget speech, delivered this afternoon, the Minister of Finance, Hon Pravin Gordhan illustrated an understanding of the constraints facing the economy and the impediments that have to be overcome in order to grow the economy, create jobs, address inequality and reduce poverty.

SACCI welcomes the plans announced by the Minister in plans announced which aim to have a country that has an inclusive social compact that encompasses an equitable tax burden and a progressive programme of expenditure.

Strained Trade Conditions


In a statement issued today the CEO of SACCI, Mr. Alan Mukoki, said:

According to SACCI’s Trade Conditions Survey of January 2016, trade conditions remained strained and closely resembled conditions following on the recession of 2007/08. The seasonally adjusted composite Trade Activity Index (TAI) for January 2016 was 39 – similar to December 2015. This is 20 index points below the TAI for January 2015.

SACCI SONA EXPECTATIONS 2016

In a statement issued today the CEO of SACCI, Mr. Alan Mukoki, said:

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) looks forward to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) as an important opportunity for President Jacob Zuma to respond to urgent economic concerns in the country. SONA should provide an indication of the policy imperatives of Government for the forthcoming year. There are several challenges that threaten economic stability that have to be dealt with as priorities over the next several months. The Business community is yearning to assist government in finding solutions to these challenges. SACCI trusts that the role of the private sector in addressing national impediments to economic growth, job creation and poverty alleviation will be a central theme of the State President’s address.

Several key challenges to economic growth require high-level attention, including the protracted sustainable electricity supply deficit; service delivery and other protests; the slow progress in the roll out of the National Development Plan (NDP) which still requires considerable buy in from stakeholders and the threat of potential further downgrades by ratings agencies. On energy policy, South Africa urgently requires additional electricity providers in order to take pressure off Eskom. Uncertainty concerning Eskom’s capacity to meet demand when projects get off the ground is one of the elements that is inhibiting growth.
