RESPONSE TO REPORTS THAT SACCI CALLS FOR LOAD SHEDDING TO BE RESTRICTED TO RESIDENTIAL AREAS

In January SACCI asked its members to submit recommendations for improving the power situation and to address load shedding.
SACCI received a number of proposals that were classified into short, medium and long term solutions. These recommendations were:
1. Immediate (One to three weeks):
a. Allow business to operate in shifts without the need to compensate labour for work outside normal hours – some businesses to operate from 08h00 to 16h00, others 16h00 to 24h00 and others 24h00 to 08h00. This was done in China by government decree. We could consider a proclamation.

SACCI WELCOMES REVISITING OF TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORS

In a statement issued today, SACCI said:

SACCI welcomes the statement made by the Minister of Tourism that South Africa’s government is reviewing its new travel rules for minors after signs that they are already hurting the key tourist sector.
SACCI supports the objectives of the new rules, and condemns child trafficking. Stakeholders should be engaged in seeking alternative ways and means of addressing the problem.

SACCI COPPER THEFT BAROMETER: APRIL 2015

The Copper Theft Barometer level increased to R13.6 million in April from R12.6 million in March 2015. The April figure is 7.08% higher than a month ago and 0.11% lower than a year ago. Bearing in mind that the SACCI Copper Theft Barometer is based only on theft from Eskom, Telkom and Transnet and considering that it comprises only the cost of replacing the metal, this figure is but a drop in the ocean when the impact on the economy is taken into account. Recent estimates put the loss to the economy between R5 and R7 billion per year – a loss that the economy can ill afford.

Unabridged birth certificates

South Africa’s advancement as a global tourist destination of choice faces disruption today (1 June) as the requirement kicks in for children to be in possession of unabridged birth certificates before being allowed into the country. While the rationale for this measure – unique in the world – may be justified as a means of controlling human trafficking, it defies understanding in the context of economic growth where tourism offers such significant hope for South Africa.
