MEDIA STATEMENT: MEDIUM TERM BUDGET POLICY STATEMENT

In a statement issued today the President of the South African chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), Mr Vusi Khumalo said:
Quote:
The medium Term Budget Policy Statement (BTBPS) which Minister Nene delivered in Parliament this afternoon holds promise that South Africa’s finances are in good hands.
SACCI liked the following:

  • The recognition that the energy constraints being experienced and the structural weaknesses add to the negative impact on economic growth that the global slowdown has on the country.
  • The acknowledgement that the country’s education and training capacity needs to be strengthened and levels of investment need to be increased.
  • A focus on the needs of small business specifically regarding taxation and the allocation of R24 billion for enterprise development.
  • The implementation of socio-economic impact assessments in identifying unintended con- sequences in legislation, regulation and policy. This is something that SACCI has long called for.
  • The introduction of a legislative framework to regulate state-owned enterprises to address their governance issues. SACCI trusts that this will reduce the need for the substantial bail outs that some have been receiving over a number of years.

SACCI EXPECTATIONS ON MID-TERM BUDGET - PRESS RELEASE PDF Print E-mail

Mid-Term Budget Review

In a statement issued today, the President of the South African chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), Mr Vusi Khumalo, said
Quote:
In his mid-term budget speech a year ago, Minister Nene recognised a “turning point” as far as the South African economy was concerned. Now, he might well use the same phrase again, for, if anything, there has been some turn for the worse and those deficiencies of the economy which exercised his mind then, remain prevalent. The threat of a further decline in the country’s credit rating looms, while the unfavourable foreign exchange rate, an indifferently-performing industrial sector and the nadir reached by SACCI’s BCI, are all signs that the projected growth rate will be much on a par with, if not worse than, the 1,4% to which the Minister referred last year.

SACCI CONGRATULATES MR BRIAN MOLEFE ON HIS AP

In a statement issued today, the President of SACCI, Mr Vusi Khumalo said:

Quote:
The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) congratulates Mr Brian Molefe on his appointment at CEO of Eskom.
In the short period that Mr Molefe has been Acting CEO he has made strides in stabilising the South African power grid, and has facilitated the improvement in maintenance of the system. However the situation remains under considerable strain and a great deal still has to done to ensure future sustainability and quality of supply so badly needed for South African economic growth which will result in job creation, poverty alleviation and reduction of inequality.
