PETROLEUM SECTOR STRIKE IN SOUTH AFRICA

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) notes with great concern the ongoing strike by the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing and Wood Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU).

SACCI further notes that the strike is due to a wage negotiation dispute over the quantum of the increase sought by the respective union. The strike will impact negatively on the economy in general. Businesses are mostly affected by the disruptions in the logistics value chain which is a critical component to many business operations.

SACCI SONA EXPECTATIONS 2016

In a statement issued today the CEO of SACCI, Mr. Alan Mukoki, said:

QUOTE:

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) looks forward to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) as an important opportunity for President Jacob Zuma to respond to urgent economic concerns in the country. SONA should provide an indication of the policy imperatives of Government for the forthcoming year. Several key challenges to economic growth require high-level attention, including the protracted sustainable electricity supply deficit; service delivery and other protests; the slow progress in the roll out of the National Development Plan (NDP) which still requires considerable buy in from stakeholders and the threat of potential further downgrades by ratings agencies. On energy policy, South Africa urgently requires additional electricity providers in order to take pressure off Eskom. Uncertainty concerning Eskom’s capacity to meet demand when projects get off the ground is one of the elements that is inhibiting growth.
