IEC LOCAL GOVERNMENT RESULT IN SOUTH AFRICA

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) would like to congratulate the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on the world class delivery of the 2016 Local Government Elections. The elections have been roundly accepted as free and fair. SACCI would further like to congratulate all the parties that participated in these elections and those who did well at the polls.

SACCI welcomes the manner in which political parties have accepted the results of the elections in which they did not succeed. This can only bode well for our maturing democracy.

We would like to encourage the parties that are in negotiations in the hung Metros and Municipalities to speed up the process so that service delivery is not negatively affected. As the voters have spoken, it is important for political parties to elevate the interests of South Africa and its communities, above narrow sectional or political considerations. It is through local government that delivery takes place, especially with the broader business community and in particular, SMMEs that are directly affected by the functioning of local government.

SACCI therefore hopes for positive outcomes in the coalition negotiations.
